Movie Review: “The Help”

Oh Ladies n’ Gents!

Do I have a review for you today! This past weekend I went to go see a movie called “The Help”, which was derived from a book written by Kathryn Stockett. Before this movie, I have never heard of the book, however after seeing the movie I am interested in reading the book.

Well for those of you that have seen it great engage in reading n’ the following discussion, but for those of you that have not, just know I will be talking about specific parts of the movie so I do not want to ruin it for you! lol

The Plot: The movie was about showcasing the feelings n’ emotions of African American Maids n’ how they worked for white families, raised there children (n’ not there own), worked for pennies on a dollar, n’ had no life! Skeeter (played by Emma Stone) not only wanted to jump started her career as a journalist/novelist but to also be the avenue for Aibileen (played by Viola Davis n’ the maid for Mrs. Leefolt–who was a weak minded follower! Dont get me started on Mrs. Leefolts character ya’ll) to share her story n’ letting her voice be heard.Skeeter first approached Aibileen to share her story, then followed a dozen other maids, who basically risked there lives to share there stories for a chance of change n’ equality. Mind you this all happened during the 1960 when the civil rights movement was underway!

I felt many emotions while watching this movie, happy, sad, n’ pissed just to name a few. Knowing that African Americans were controlled off of fear n’ condemned by the color of their skin, seen as diseased, dirty, n’ less of a person, was of course what lead to the pissed part. However, there were many FUNNY Parts of “The Help” , for example:

Fav part: I had a few, but there was a part in the movie were Minny Jackson (played by Octavia Spencer) the maid for Hilly Holbrook (Played by Bryce Dallas Howard), brought Hilly a pie to make peace, so to speak. Well Minny had a plan of revenge to get back at Hilly for all of her mistreatment while being her maid, like making her go use the bathroom outside in a storm. N e who, Hilly asked her “what did you put in this pie to make it taste so good?” At this point Hillys mother walks in to try to get a piece n’ Minny tells her “No this is Hillys Special Pie” Hilly asks again what’s in it?, n’ Minny says….”MY SHIT” LOL…the crowd in the audience fell out laughing! I know I did! Minny said it so so calmly as if to say “Now what beech” LOL! Oh boy…that was the kicker…

But one thing they did show was how a lot of people felt bad for treating there maids poorly, but how society made them. How a lot of woman back in that day just wanted to “Fit in with the Jones” well in this case lets say the “Hillys” n’ never thought for themselves. One other super important point, was the love of Aibileen (played by Viola Davis) toward Mrs. Leefolts child n’ Skeeter (played by Emma Stone) with her maid  Constantine (played by Cicely Tyson, now you know they can not have a movie staged back in the day, especially about A.A without the beautiful Cicely Tyson, LETS just be real! lol)  they should that regardless of race or financial gain love is the most important factor!

The Worst Part: How the black community was depicted as money hungry, diseased, n’ just dirty. Hilly, made a proposal to the Mississippi government that “All Negros should have there own toilet outside, so that they cant use the bathrooms on the inside”. Hilly mentioned, “it would be nice for them to have their own!” Also, they showed black women as being double marginalized  not only are they oppressed by being a maid n’ making nothing, but they are going home to there abusive men. Minny was abused by her boyfriend I am guessing they never said if Leroy was her husband, boyfriend, boo, or what! LOL

However the movie was interesting, it took a while to get to the point, not to mention it was about 2 hours n’ 15 minutes long. I’d Give it a C+ ONLY BECAUSE…the ending was bad…they should Aibileen who was the first one to share her story in the help, get fired from her job due to Hilly n’ she just walked into the sunset O_o! I wanted to see more like, she came out with her own book, she moved to NY, something…it was to vague…

But N.E.Who how did you guys enjoy the movie? What were some of your fav n’ not so fav parts?
Speak On IT!

*Besos*

I have not seen the movie yet but I thought the book was really good. Based on the previews it appears that they kept the movie pretty true to the book.
