The Face Behind Komplexx Blends Cosmetics…Meet Karian Newby

1. Tell us about yourself n’ what you do?

My name is Karian Newby-Durham, born and raised in Detroit, MI. currently residing in Houston, TX after the completing my B.A. in Marketing from Prairie View A& M University.  I’m a 23yr old MUA who loves to express my Alter Ego through make-up!

2. What inspired you to become a Makeup Artist?

At the age of 16 every one around me was deeply involved in the beauty industry making money by doing something that they were great at and I thought to myself why not me. So I started playing around with make-up. I figured since I had been wearing make-up since I was little doing dance recitals, I should have some understanding on how to apply make-up; so, I took my idea and ran with it. As my talents grew, I noticed that there were not pigments for every skin tone and I wanted to develop a brand that was user-friendly to all complexions so I started my on cosmetics company, Komplexx Blends Cosmetics.  Because I also wanted to give back to a good cause with my company, I decided to donate a portion of the proceeds back to the Parkinson’s foundation in honor of my grandmother – and never looked back

3. What is the meaning behind the name of your company Komplexx Blends?

Komplexx Blends mean: For every complexion, we offer a blend of cosmetics that work

4. What do you think are some of the biggest makeup trends for summer 2011?

The make-up trend for 2011 is bright, bright, bright.  Use bright eye shadows to intensify your look.  Make heads turn with a bold lip color, such as plums, ruby and bright pinks; however, you can never go wrong with a natural look for a clean and elegant demeanor for a night on the town

5. Besides using your amazing Komplexx Blend cosmetics, what other brands do you like to use?

There are a lot of great cosmetics companies out there; however, I use all my products from foundation to lip gloss. To be honest I can’t remember the last time I bought another brand.

6. When applying makeup, have you ever experienced a client that was challenging (as in she had acne, scars, etc) ? If so how did you overcome it?

I think for most make-up artists, the area under a client’s eye can be a challenge, depending on the tone of the client’s skin. So being able to successfully blend concealer in that area and the skin tone still look natural in pictures and in person is a challenge that I love.  The key is to have the client tilt their head downward to see any circles or shadows and conceal with a tone that is lighter (typically no lighter then two shades) and work downwards until the concealer disappears into their natural skin tone.

7. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone that wants to start their own makeup line?

When developing a cosmetic line, come up with a mission that sets you apart from the competition. A million people might sale the same products you have (eye shadow, lip gloss, mascara), but they may not have the same great customer service and that’s what keeps them coming back. You will have a lot of push backs, but that only makes you stronger.
